Determine Your Core Values

CHARACTER IN LEADERSHIP

The following exercise will help you pinpoint your core values. These are the values that are most important to you both as a person and as a leader, driving your motivation and decisions, and guiding your thought processes and actions.

  1. EVALUATE YOUR VALUES
From the list below, choose and write down every word or trait that resonates with you. It may resonate because it’s something that is important to you, because it is a way you strive to be or act, or something you strive to incorporate into your life. Do not overthink your selections. As you read through the list, simply write down the words that feel like a core value to you personally. If you think of a value that is not on the list, be sure to write it down as well.
  2. GROUP ALL SIMILAR VALUES TOGETHER FROM THE LIST OF VALUES YOU JUST CREATED
Group them in a way that makes sense to you, personally. Create a maximum of five groupings. If you have more than five groupings, drop those least important to you.
  3. CHOOSE ONE WORD WITHIN EACH GROUPING THAT BEST REPRESENTS THE LABEL FOR THE ENTIRE GROUP Again, do not overthink your labels. There are no right or wrong answers. You are defining the answer that is right for you.
  4. ADD A VERB TO EACH VALUE Add a verb to each value so you can see what it looks like as an actionable core value. For example, if your core values were freedom, making a difference, mindfulness, well-being, and happiness, your verbs might be: Live in freedom. Seek opportunities for making a difference. Act with mindfulness. Promote well-being. Multiply happiness. These sentences will guide you in the actions you need to take to feel like you are truly abiding by your core values.

Congratulations! You have just determined your top five personal values.
